In response to questions asked by Darjeeling MP Raju Bista regarding the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in the state of West Bengal, the Minister of State for Jal Shakti, Shri Prahlad Singh Patel, highlighted the significant progress made under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM)-Har Ghar Jal initiative. The mission aims to provide tap water connection to every rural household in India.
Since its launch in August 2019, the Jal Jeevan Mission has been implemented in collaboration with State governments across the country. The central government has been monitoring the progress and holding regular review meetings, conferences, workshops, and video conferences at the highest level to ensure timely and effective implementation.
As of July 2023, the State of West Bengal reported that approximately 61.25 lakh additional rural households have been provided with tap water connections under JJM. This brings the total number of rural households in West Bengal with tap water supply to around 63.40 lakh which accounts for 34.36% of the total 184.54 lakh rural households in the state.
The Minister emphasized that the central government plays a supportive role by providing technical and financial assistance to the States. Drinking water supply schemes, being a state subject, are planned, designed, approved, and implemented by the respective States. Each State also establishes grievance redressal mechanisms to address public grievances related to the Jal Jeevan Mission effectively.
To keep the public informed about the progress of the Jal Jeevan Mission, the status of tap water connections in rural areas, including the districts of West Bengal, is made available to the public through the JJM dashboard. The dashboard can be accessed at: https://ejalshakti.gov.in/jjmreport/JJMIndia.aspx
The Jal Jeevan Mission is a transformative initiative that aims to provide safe and potable water to every rural household, ensuring a better quality of life and improved health and hygiene for millions of people. With the proactive efforts of the central government and the dedication of the States, the mission is moving forward steadily towards its goal of Har Ghar Jal for every rural home in the country.
