Funds Released for Scientific Solid Waste Management in the Himalayan Region of Darjeeling and Kalimpong

Darjeeling and Kalimpong, two of the most picturesque regions in India, are set to receive a much-needed boost in their efforts to preserve their natural beauty and protect the environment for future generations. Darjeeling MP Raju Bista Ji informed through his official Facebook page about the release of the first installment of funds towards “Integrated Scientific Solutions for Improving Legacy Municipal Solid Waste Management in the Indian Himalayan Region,” as part of the National Mission on Himalayan Studies.

MP Raju Bista Ji spoke about the region’s unparalleled beauty and the responsibility of every citizen to ensure its cleanliness, greenery, and overall health. The allocated funds are set to be utilized for projects focusing on scientific solid waste management in the municipalities of Darjeeling and Kalimpong. The project is expected to not only enhance waste management in the area but also serve as a model for other regions facing similar environmental challenges in the Himalayan belt.

Under this project, researchers will employ advanced technologies to mechanize landfills and tackle legacy waste effectively. Some of the key initiatives include segregation of waste, recycling of plastic waste, treatment of biodegradable waste, utilization of construction and demolition waste, and the treatment of leachate from legacy waste. The goal is to manage waste in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner so that the region’s natural beauty is preserved.

One of the main aspects of this waste management project is the conversion of segregated waste into valuable utilities. Organic waste will be transformed into vermicompost, providing an eco-friendly solution for agricultural needs. Plastic waste will be recycled to create flowerpots, reducing the environmental impact of plastic pollution. Furthermore, construction waste will be used to produce bricks, encouraging the use of eco-friendly building materials.

MP Raju Bista Ji expressed his gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi Ji for his support in making this project a reality. He also extended heartfelt thanks to Hon’ble Minister of Environment Forest and Climate Change Sh. Bhupendra Yadav Ji for approving and recognizing the significance of this initiative for the Darjeeling and Kalimpong regions.
