Parliamentary Committee on Labour Hearings Continue
The Parliamentary Committee on Labour continued our hearings, to ensure help, support and assistance to all workers who are facing difficulties due to COVID-19 pandemic. Today the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs gave us an update on what their respective ministries have been doing.
So far, our Government has provided free of cost foodgrain to over 81 crore beneficieries under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana. This is over and above the regular ration distributed through NFSA. For migrant workers, free of cost food grains were provide to all under the Atma Nirbhar Bharat Scheme.
We were also informed that the Union Government will be working towards provisioning low cost housing to migrant workers under the Affordable Rental Housing Complexes (ARHCs).
I have highlighted irregularities in distribution of ration in Darjeeling hills, Terai and Dooars, particularly in the tea gardens. I also highlighted how returning migrant workers from our region did not get their free of cost ration as allocated by the Central Govt.
I also informed the Committee on the delay in provisioning digital ration card, which has lead to many people from our region in being depriped of their right to food.
I have therefore requested the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution to conduct an indepth inquiry into these issues, so that those who have tried to deprive people from our region in such difficult times can be exposed and punished.
