Hon’ble Prime Minister dedicated the historic ‘Kosi Rail Mahasetu’ to the Nation

Today, our Hon’ble Prime Minister dedicated the historic ‘Kosi Rail Mahasetu’ to the Nation through a video-conference. This historic rail bridge will improve rail connectivity of Bihar and the entire region connecting to the North East.
The 1.9 Km Mega Bridge line project is of strategic importance along the India-Nepal border.
Showcasing the immense resilience of our nation and its people, despite the challenges posed by COVID-19 pandemic, the project was completed with the active participation of migrant workers.
It is shocking to note that a meter gauge rail-link was built between Nirmali and Bhaptiahi in the region in 1887 itself. However, after that line was washed away during the devastating flood and earthquake of 1934, no attempts had been made to restore the rail connectivity.
It was under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji and Hon’ble Rail Minister Piyush Goyal ji, this important project sanctioned in 2003, could finally see the light of the day.
Besides the Koshi Mahasetu rail bridge, Hon’ble PM also inaugurated five rail line electrification projects, one of which is the line connecting New Jalpaiguri-Katihar section.
For the people of Darjeeling Hills, Terai, and Dooars, and also the Northeast region, the electrification of Katihar – New Jalpaiguri stretch will not only help improve the connectivity, but it will also provide an environment friendly modes of travel, boosting trade, commerce, and passenger mobility across the region.
These new railway projects are strategically aimed towards making railway operations environment friendly and sustainable in the long run, and it will go a long way in strengthening connectivity and infrastructure in our border areas.
