On the 30th of June, 2019 MP Raju Bista met with the Hon’ble Minister of Human Resource Development Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ yesterday and submitted a memorandum regarding the demand for Central University at Darjeeling.
The Hon’ble Minister has assured MP Raju Bista that he will look into the matter on a priority basis and follow up with his office regarding the issue.
During the interaction, the MP highlighted the significance of brand Darjeeling and how this could be used to attract students not only from India but also from across South Asia and South East Asia. He impressed upon the Hon’ble Minister that establishing a Central University in Darjeeling can help to turn it into one of the hubs for higher education in India and an important education centre in all of South and South East Asia. He also explained how a Central University in Darjeeling will greatly complement PM Modi ji’s Act East Policy, and help India build stronger ties to the South Asian and South East Asian nations.
The MP informed the Hon’ble Minister that lack of proper higher education facilities in the region has resulted in massive brain-drain from the region, and how the best and the brightest from our region are forced to take their knowledge, skills and passion elsewhere.
He explained how the establishment of an institution of higher and technical learning in Darjeeling has been a long-standing aspiration and pertinent demand of the people of the region, and how a Central University shall fulfil such aspiration and address the educational needs of the people here, while at the same time playing an important role in the development of the entire North Bengal region.
The Hon’ble MHRD Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ in turn assured MP Bista that he will take up this matter on a priority basis.
